Yes it is possible to do this. First of all you need to get a CAT-5 cross-over cable, When you have this you will insert the cable into both computers via port in back (looks like an oversized phone jack). Once you have that you can boot either computer. When windows starts up you go to your network connections. Then view network connections. You should see where you are connected to another computer. Right click on this connection and go to your properties. Once you do that a window will pop-up that says local area connection properties. It should already have the General Tab selected. From here in the box where it says ''This connection uses the following items.'' scroll down to an option that says ''Internet protocol TCP/IP. Then click on it and then click the Install button. Install the options that are there. This allows the computer to play games over LAN and Internet servers. Now once you have this set up you should be able to select a multiplayer game and it should auto configure for the connection. Make sure you do this to both computers so that they will be able to see one another. To double check and make sure that you still have a connection with the other computer check the bottom right of the screen (by the clock) and Look for the symbol of a computer in front of another computer. Drag the mouse over it but do not click. Check and see if it says that you have a 100.0 mbs by speed and that the status says connected as long as they say that you should be fine. HAPPY GAMING!!!!

Mandy, didn't the instructions come with the D-Link DI-604 Router? You don't have them? Okay. The modem cable that's going to your computer plugs into the WAN port on your router. Then an ethernet cable comes out of Port 1 to your first computer, and Port 2 to the second one. A WAN key has to be set for the second one. The D-Link may do it automatically, or you may have to do it manually,(go into Internet Connections) Internet information is coming in to your router, the WAN key has an 'address' for your first computer, directing the information to it. If it didn't have this key, the information wouldn't know where to go, it would just 'return mail/wrong address'. Same applies for the second computer.

we had a emachine for 6 yrs , we gave it still working to a friend when we got this new one. they seem very good for the price. juts be sure to read the details and see it meets your needs. is the ram expandable or is it maxed already example 512 installed up to 4 gig possible , is the video card in it capable of doing what you need, if your a gamer does it have a slot open to change cards later. upgrade ability is important. but my experience is that they are reliable and well made.

you do not need a print server. All you have to do is to run the network setup wizard and turn on file and printer sharing.

Then Control Panel%26gt;Printers and Other hardware%26gt;add printer(do this on the laptop, browse for printer)

If your printer is shared all you will do is download a printer driver on your laptop from your desktop. (all in the add printer)

Keep in mind that you have to add both computers to each other's firewalls as a custom list Port. And your desktop has to be on if you are printing from your laptop. (since the printer is wired to the desktop)

Most likely either Windows Firewall is blocking the traffic or you have another firewall installed that is blocking the traffic.

Try making sure that all software firewalls are disabled. then try pinging the ip address of other computers and the router from the different computer to test connectivity. Then try sharing a folder. If you are able to get this to work, then you know it is the software firewalls. Afterwords, you can turn them back on and then set them up to accept the ip addresses of the other computers on your network.

I am planning on building computers and selling them as a side job. I was thinking of first installing either windows 98, or 2000 onto the computer when I was finished putting all the parts together. Then I would use a USB internet card to go online and download Ubuntu operating system for free. Ubuntu is a form of Linux operating system, and therfore not as popular as Windows or Mac operating systems. I was wondering if I could buy a Vista or XP operating system disc, and somehow installing the operating system onto multiple computers with only that one disc. I have searched the internet and found sites about XP service packs that allow you to install XP on multiple systems, but have seen more sites that have reassured me that installing XP or Vista onto multiple computers is impossible.

You need to buy licenses. If something happens to their computer, they will have no CD to repair Windows with or anything.

A computer with Ubuntu? good luck selling that. But to make it easier for you incase you decide to go that route... You only need a ISO CD of Ubuntu then just install it on the PC... No need to install Windows 2000, download Ubuntu, then figure out how to install it.

I know that I have problems with my wireless if I don't use the icon to turn it on before I try with windows to turn it on. i had the same problem with linksys equipment. somewhere in the software that states that you are connected, there should be an option that says ''use windows zero config'' or something similar. click that and it should connect.

that's what worked for me, but it's hard to say without being there and seeing it firsthand.

Yes, they both can share. However, there is a slight problem. The dial-up will be so slow that it wouldn't be worth sharing. If you are still bent on doing it, here is how it works.

Both computers need to have a Local Area Network (LAN) port. You connect the two computers together with the LAN cable. Once that is done, you need to set them both up on the same network. You can do this through the networking wizard. On the computer that has the dialup modem, (if you are using the dial-up for the internet) you make sure the settings for the network wizard is set to ''This computer connects directly to the Internet''. For the computer that doesn't have the dial-up, you use the settings ''This computer connects to the internet through another computer or gateway''. That should do it and as long as the connecting computer is connected to the internet, the other computer will have internet as well.

Your ISP maybe you problem it maybe the one dropping out. I run an Imac a PC two laptops and rally do i get a drop out. Write down what they tell then next time fix it yourself. I doubt you could use a usb cable to do this although fiber optics might be fast enough and if you happen to have a big pocketbook you could probably get someone to figure this out for you. Luckily there's no details required here: no, there's absolutely no way to to do what you're asking. Each machine is a separate entity and, aside from the networking that you already know about to share files, there's no way to 'combine' the resources of the two machines in the way you mention.

I am going to go ahead and say No to this one. Since they usually get tied to one connection at a time over USB it's not like you can go buy a USB splitter and do this. If you want to share a drive between two computers the best way to go would be for Network Attached Storage.

Some Routers have USB ports that allow you to plugin an external USB Hard Drive and share data over that since it has the technology to manage multiple connections to it.

I use Apple's Airport Extreme to accomplish this task. It is probably a little pricy for what you are looking to do. Linksys, DLink make devices that can do this for a little cheaper. Asus has a Router with a 250GB HDD in it that can also be used as a BitTorrent client.

But in theory it could work but I doubt it for your scenario.

There's lots of ways to go with that one. Most careers these days involve computers to one degree or other. If you're creative and artistic, graphic art design is a highly popular choice and is taught at most art institutes and trade colleges. If you're more creative and mathematical, you might want to look into software engineering/coding, where you would get a computer science degree. If you like working with people and computers, technical support and corporate helpdesks are great careers to get into and generally do not require a degree to enter, although advancing later is best done with a business management degree.
Well if you like physically working on them and such I would say go with Computer IT thats what im in right now...you pretty much learn working with computers/networking on computers....or if you want to go into making your own programs for computers you could try software engineer....but for overall computer I would say Comp IT...or electronics engineering. Ohyea and as for the degrees you can get an Associates or Bachelors in both...so depending on where you want to work and how much you want to make only 2-4 years.

I have an odd problem with my XP SP2 computer. I have about 4 other computers on the network (all running XP SP2), theyre all in the same workgroup, and they can all see each other. If the two computers are near each other, and they both have a network card, you can connect them together using a ''crossover'' cable. This is a special network cable where the recieve and transmit wires are ''crossed'' to the opposite position on each end. You could then set up the network between the two.

If they aren't near each other and you really do want to create a dial-up using the Internet Sharing within XP.

I'm looking for a laptop, and planning to go into engineering. I have 2 questions:

1. I've heard that there are some programs that you would need for engineering, and that they just work on windows not mac's. Is this true?

2. I've also heard that to get around this problem, you can install windows on your mac computer. If you do this could you still use apple to go on the internet, therefore decreasing the chances of getting a virus?

I am adding this to ''engineering'' instead of, say, ''computers'' because i would assume that engineers and engineering students would be the best to answer this question because they would KNOW what they themseleves use.

Most engineering and even cad software doesn't work on mac.Over all macs are slower than pc. As for a virus get a virus scanner keep auto updates turned on. I havn't caught a virus in 10 years.

I was wondering if Macs are better than pc's? If so, in what way? I know that they supposedly don't get the viruses, better compatibility with peripherals...etc. But, other than those issues, why are Macs supposedly better to use than pc's?

And if Macs are so much better, why does 97% of business out there use pc's and why does 99% of the human species use pc's? You'd think a better product gets more customers.

One, you can install one copy of Vista on one computer. Vista is licensed per device. One copy of Vista per computer only. You can transfer that copy of Vista one time but may not do so for the purpose of sharing the license with two devices.
