How to share the internet between two computers & with each other?

I've two computers(PC) in my home and recently I got a broadband internet connection. Now I want to setup a home network where I can connect the two computers with each other to share files as well as to share the internet too.

I got a switch and two ethernet card for two computers too. But I'm not able to connect two PCs simultaneously. When I connect one the other has to be logoff. For your information, I am supposed to use one IP only.

So anybody can guide me how to do this.

How to share the internet between two computers %26 with each other?ariel

You need a router, not a switch. You would put the router after your modem and then hook both pc's into the router.

Make sure the router has a built in switch most do so that shouldn't be an issue.

You have to use DHCP and dynamic IP addresses. You should make a little LAN between those two PCs. This swithc will be of great help. One port has to be given to one PC and another to the other. If DHCP is on than you will ger your addresses as soon as you turn on your PCs (the switch should be on all the time, that is the natural work regime, but if there are some trouble with LED diodes of your switch than you should first check this problem out. Check your cables, if they are correctly pluged in, than the settings of ypur switch. There you should check the way your address range is set. Maybe you have some factory predefined settings so you should change them. If you ask me, you should make private pool of addresses and make DHCP work from it, so every time you turn on any of your PC-s you will get some IP address from your formed pool of private adresses. Do not worry of having one outer address given byu provider, this address will be NAT-ed by your Switch and thanx to DHCP you will have enough IP addresses which will not be seen outside. So you could form very huge address pool. One exxample 192.168.0.0 and network mask 255.255.255.0 which will give you 254 free private addresses. Notice that 192.168.0.0 and 192.168.0.255 are reserved and not available for applying as you PC addresses. The first one iz network address and the secont one is broadcast address.

If you have some worries of what is LAN and private network, you could read something about it on the net, examle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_net...
You'll need to sell your switch and buy a router. Your switch just forwards traffic, but a router actually takes the IP address for itself and routes the internet traffic between the two computers.
You need a router, not a switch, in order to share internet connection and set up a home network...
use a router and run Network Setup Wizard.
