You need to buy a crossover cable. Do not use a standard cable!

short and sweet and simple. Buy a wired/wireless router with a 4 port switch for around 40 bucks and be done with it. You'll be able to connect 4 computers via ethernet cable to the ports, and if you get it with wireless you'll be able to connect an additional 249 computers wirelessly if you need to..
Don't know much about networking. All I know is that my Mum has 2 computers connected to one DSL line but hers is set up by the wireless way
You probably need a ethernet modem router. I bought one by Lynxis. It slows down the web if you are using two pcs or more on one dsl line, I found. Actually, I was reading my gateway desktop manual, and I didn't know, it has a built-in router in back to plug into. I never needed a router afterall. Read your pc manual and maybe you got a built-in router in back. You never know.
router is the only way I know
Nope. The only way I know to do this is connect your best computer to the modem, then connect your 2 computers via data USB cable. That might work if you set up the second computer to piggyback off the first.
